Ha’way the lads! Sunderland desde la cuna!

Let’s jump right into it. Some of you may be wondering why a large part of Mexico’s population and a majority of Mexican’s outside of the country are suddenly supporting the black cats of Sunderland AFC.

It all began with user Pasion Celeste on X (formerly Twitter), a fan account for Mexican club Cruz Azul.

On the 16th of August, Pasion Celeste suggested that to mess with Europe, the entirety of the Twitter Fútbol community should choose an underdog team and pledge their undying support for said team.

This would in turn confuse European Football and the chosen team, leaving them scratching their heads and asking, in Pasion Celeste’s own words, “What the dick? Why are some horrible Mexicans supporting us?”.

An Outpour of Love

After Sunderland trounced West Ham 3-0, Sunderland’s posts on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and all other social media platforms exploded with comments, in Spanish, from Mexican supporters.

Comments such as,

“Puro pinche Sunderland” – “Pure fucking Sunderland”

“Sunderland desde la cuna” – Sunderland since the cradle”

“Sunderland para toda la vida” – “Sunderland for life”

“Mi madre me dio vida, pero el Sunderland me dio las ganas para vivir la” – “My mother gave me life, but Sunderland gave me the will to live it”

All comments congratulating the black cats on their victory over the mighty hammers. These comments were followed by emojis of the Mexican flag, and some were even paired with meme images depicting characters wearing Sunderland’s home kit and waving a Mexican flag.

This outpour of support had the intended effect and did in fact leave Sunderland, its fans, and honestly anyone who wasn’t in on the joke scratching their heads and asking why?

Sunderland fans were genuinely confused as to why there was such a huge wave of support for their beloved club.

Regardless of the confusion, it was a welcome sight for long-time Sunderland supporters, and ever since that first barrage of comments, every Sunderland post that came afterwards has been filled with Mexican supporters pledging their undying loyalty to the club.

Ha’way Los Mexicanos

As soon as Sunderland AFC caught wind of what was happening, they returned that love right back.

I’ll let you know right now, if Mexicans show you love and you return it, you have a long-lasting and loyal fanbase that money cannot buy.

Sunderland filmed several of their players greeting the new Mexican fanbase in Spanish, saying, “Vamos muchachos,” and in the post, wishing them a Happy Independence Day.

English Underdogs

Sunderland are back in the English Premier League after 8 long years in the lower leagues of England.

They’ve had a great start to their season, and coupled with the fact that their fan base has grown exponentially, they’re enjoying a great start to a new chapter in their club history.

In their most recent match, Sunderland defeated 2 times Champions League winners Nottingham Forest, 1-0. Their next match will see them face off against the red devils of Manchester United, who are having a rather poor start to their season.

Climbing the Ladder

In the 2021/2022 season, Sunderland placed 5th in League One of the English Football League, earning themselves the ability to take part in the 2022 English Football League play-offs. They made it to the final and defeated Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Wembley Stadium, and earned their place in England’s Championship League.

For the next 3 years, Sunderland would struggle to gain their promotion into England’s Premier League, and it wasn’t til the 2024/2025 season that Sunderland once again took part in the play-offs. They would once again make it to the final hosted at Wembley Stadium and defeated Sheffield United 2-1. Scoring in stoppage time to secure their promotion to the Premier League.
